Google to donate Istio service mesh to the CNCF

Google Cloud has submitted its common open supply service mesh expertise Istio for donation to the vendor-neutral Cloud Native Computing Basis (CNCF).

“As we speak we’re excited to announce that Google and the Istio Steering Committee have submitted the Istio challenge for consideration as an incubating challenge,” Chen Goldberg, VP of engineering at Google Cloud wrote in a weblog submit.

Launched in 2017, Istio permits builders to handle community site visitors, telemetry, and safety for purposes deployed in containers and orchestrated with Kubernetes, which was itself donated to the CNCF by Google in 2015.

Different common service mesh choices embrace Linkerd and Consul by HashiCorp. Microsoft additionally introduced in 2020 that it will launch its personal open supply service mesh—known as Open Service Mesh (OSM) — and switch it to the CNCF.

Google says that if Istio is accepted by the CNCF it is going to proceed to spend money on the challenge as a key maintainer and thru upstream contributions.

Google had initially introduced throughout KubeCon in 2019 that it wasn’t planning on donating both its common serverless platform Knative or Istio to the CNCF any time quickly, preferring to handle Istio itself below its Open Utilization Commons basis.
